Anatole Fistoulari (1907-1995) was a Ukrainian-born conductor, widely admired for ballet and Russian repertory. A child prodigy on the podium, he later worked extensively in Britain and made many recordings.

Fistoulari was especially associated with Tchaikovsky, ballet scores and concerto accompaniment. In the Pristine catalogue he appears with Clifford Curzon, Julius Katchen, Alfredo Campoli and the London Symphony Orchestra.

His conducting is energetic, theatrical and rhythmically alive, with a natural feeling for dance. He knew how to keep orchestral colour moving without letting it turn into syrup.

Though he never held the same institutional power as some contemporaries, his recorded legacy is substantial. Fistoulari remains one of the great ballet conductors to have left a strong discographic footprint.
