Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was an American composer of Armenian and Scottish descent, known for a vast catalogue and a spiritual, often contemplative musical language. Born in Massachusetts, he developed a style that stood apart from much academic modernism.

His works include more than sixty numbered symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral pieces and works inspired by Armenian, Indian, Japanese and other musical traditions. Mysterious Mountain is among his best-known scores.

Hovhaness’s music often uses modal melody, chant-like lines, drones and luminous orchestral textures. It seeks timelessness and ritual atmosphere rather than dramatic conflict.

His reputation has moved between admiration and neglect, but his individual voice is unmistakable. Hovhaness sounds like a composer listening for bells on a mountain no map quite reaches.
