Alfred Deller (1912-1979) was an English countertenor whose career helped revive the countertenor voice in modern classical music. Born in Margate, he first became known through cathedral and early-music performance.

Deller was especially associated with Purcell, Dowland, English lute song and Renaissance and Baroque repertory. In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Purcell and Christmas repertory.

His singing was distinctive for its purity, intimacy and textual sensitivity. At a time when the countertenor was still unusual on the concert platform, Deller made the voice sound both ancient and freshly possible.

His influence on early-music performance was immense. Deller did not simply sing old music; he reopened a small, high window and let the light back in.
