Tibor de Machula (1912-1982) was a Hungarian-born cellist, long associated with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He was one of the notable orchestral and solo cellists of his generation.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears with Furtwängler in Schumann and Tchaikovsky, and in Bloch’s Schelomo with Willem van Otterloo.

His playing combined orchestral authority with a soloist’s breadth of tone. A principal cellist of this calibre shapes not only solos, but the whole lower string character of an orchestra.

His page is justified by repeated catalogue appearances and by his standing among twentieth-century cellists. De Machula gives the cello line a deep, burnished signature.
