Nathaniel Shilkret (1889-1982) was an American composer, conductor, clarinettist and recording executive. He became an important figure in early twentieth-century American recording and radio.

Shilkret wrote popular songs, film music, concert works and arrangements, and conducted widely for Victor. He also helped organise and conduct parts of the collaborative Genesis Suite.

His music and career sit at the meeting point of concert culture, commercial recording and entertainment. He had the practical versatility demanded by the studio age.

Shilkret’s importance lies as much in musical organisation and recording history as in individual compositions. He was one of the men behind the curtain when the curtain had a microphone in front of it.
