Jeremiah Clarke (c.1674-1707) was an English Baroque composer and organist, active in London at the turn of the eighteenth century. He served at Winchester College, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Chapel Royal, and belonged to the generation after Purcell.

Clarke is best known for the Prince of Denmark’s March, long misattributed to Purcell and widely familiar as the so-called Trumpet Voluntary. He also wrote theatre music, songs, odes and church music.

His music is ceremonial, tuneful and compact, with a clear sense of public occasion. In the famous march, a simple trumpet-like idea becomes almost architectural in its confidence and proportion.

Clarke’s life ended tragically young, and much of his work now lies outside everyday repertory. Yet one brilliant piece has kept his name ringing through weddings, broadcasts and concert encores like a polished brass bell.
