Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) was a Norwegian violinist, conductor and composer. Born in Drammen, he worked as a performer and conductor before becoming an important figure in theatre and orchestral life in Oslo.

His works include orchestral music, theatre scores, dances and arrangements. The Entry March of the Boyars and his concert pieces after Handel are among his best-known works.

Halvorsen’s music is vivid, well-crafted and often national in colour, with a performer’s feel for brilliance and character. His theatre work gave him an instinct for scene and gesture.

Though he stands in Grieg’s shadow internationally, Halvorsen remains an important Norwegian musical figure. His best music has polish, vigour and clear dramatic profile.
