Leone Sinigaglia (1868-1944) was an Italian composer and mountaineer, active in the late Romantic and early twentieth-century period. Born in Turin, he studied with Dvořák and became interested in both classical craft and folk materials.

His works include orchestral pieces, chamber music, songs and arrangements of Piedmontese folk songs. His music was conducted by Toscanini and other major Italian musicians.

Sinigaglia’s style is lyrical, well-made and often coloured by northern Italian folk character. It combines Central European training with local melodic identity.

His life ended during the persecution of Jews under Fascism, just as he was being arrested. His music remains a poignant thread in Italian musical history: cultivated, regional and shadowed by the century around it.
