John Vincent (1902-1977) was an American composer and teacher. He studied at Harvard and later in Europe, and became active in American academic and concert life.

His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano music and choral pieces. His music appears in the Pristine catalogue through Eugene Ormandy’s advocacy of American repertory.

Vincent’s style is modern, disciplined and often contrapuntal, shaped by twentieth-century American seriousness and formal craft. It avoids easy theatricality in favour of constructed argument.

Though now a specialist name, Vincent belongs to the mid-century American landscape of composers building a native concert tradition. His music has the firm grain of carefully worked timber.
