Luigi Nono (1924-1990) was an Italian composer, one of the most important figures in post-war European modernism. Born in Venice, he studied with Gian Francesco Malipiero and became associated with the Darmstadt avant-garde.

His works include vocal, choral, orchestral and electronic music, often shaped by political conviction and experimental sound. Pieces such as Il canto sospeso and Prometeo are central to his reputation.

Nono’s music is intense, searching and often radical in its treatment of voice, space and timbre. It treats sound as both artistic material and moral witness.

His work can be demanding, but it carries rare seriousness of purpose. Nono wrote music that listens into ruins, resistance and the fragile human voice.
