Cornelis Dopper (1870-1939) was a Dutch composer and conductor closely associated with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Born in Stadskanaal, he became part of the generation that helped define Dutch orchestral life in the early twentieth century.

Dopper wrote operas, choral works and orchestral music, including seven symphonies. Several of his works draw on Dutch subjects or historical imagination, reflecting a strong interest in national musical identity.

His style is late Romantic, colourful and direct, often built for strong public effect rather than private abstraction. As a conductor he also played a practical role in the orchestral world that sustained his music.

Although his reputation is now largely Dutch and specialist, Dopper belongs to the wider European story of composers seeking a national voice after Wagner and Brahms. His music has the sturdy profile of civic confidence, polished brass and open air.
