Kurt Weill (1900-1950) was a German-born composer who became one of the defining theatrical musicians of the twentieth century. Born in Dessau, he worked in Berlin before exile took him first to France and then to the United States.

His works include The Threepenny Opera, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Street Scene, songs, concert works and music for stage and radio. His collaboration with Bertolt Brecht became historically decisive.

Weill’s music is sharp, lyrical and theatrically alert, moving from Berlin cabaret bite to Broadway fluency without losing its distinctive profile. He understood melody as both seduction and critique.

His career crosses opera, popular song and musical theatre with unusual authority. Weill made the stage sound modern, hungry and dangerous in a very well-cut suit.
