Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) was an Austrian composer of dance music and operetta, and the most famous member of the Strauss musical dynasty. Born in Vienna, he became internationally known as the “Waltz King.”

His works include hundreds of waltzes, polkas, marches and quadrilles, along with operettas such as Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron. The Blue Danube remains one of the most recognisable pieces in all classical music.

Strauss’s music combines melodic abundance, rhythmic lift and superb control of dance momentum. Its apparent ease depends on exquisite timing and orchestral polish.

He made Viennese dance music a central European export, giving social music a dazzling public life. His best waltzes still seem to enter with white gloves and leave the chandeliers moving.
