John Francis Wade (1711-1786) was an English Catholic musician and hymn copyist, remembered chiefly for his association with Adeste Fideles, known in English as O Come, All Ye Faithful.

The hymn became one of the most widely sung Christmas pieces in the Western tradition. Wade’s role as copyist and likely composer has made his name inseparable from its transmission.

The music is direct, ceremonial and warmly communal, built for confident congregational singing. Its strength lies in a melody that feels both festive and processional.

Wade is not a composer in the large-catalogue sense, but one hymn gives him a secure musical afterlife. Few names need only four words of Latin to open so many doors.
