Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) was an Italian-born composer, pianist, teacher, publisher and piano manufacturer who made his career chiefly in London. He was one of the great keyboard figures of the Classical era and a crucial force in the rise of the piano.

Clementi wrote sonatas, symphonies, chamber music and pedagogical works, most famously Gradus ad Parnassum. His piano sonatas were widely studied and helped define a new, brilliant keyboard idiom suited to the developing instrument.

His music combines clarity, virtuosity and structural strength. Compared with Mozart’s singing elegance, Clementi often points toward a more pianistic, athletic and textural style.

Known to later generations as the “father of the pianoforte,” Clementi influenced both playing and composition. His legacy lives not only in concert works, but in the hands of generations of pianists who met him on the practice desk.
