Alfred Poell (1900-1968) was an Austrian baritone, closely associated with Vienna and with post-war German-language repertory. He sang opera, concert music and Lieder, and appeared in important recordings and broadcasts.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Furtwängler’s 1953 Rome Ring, part of one of the great Wagner broadcast documents of the period.

Poell’s singing combined firm baritone tone with cultivated musical intelligence. He was the kind of singer who could bring shape and character to ensemble drama without needing to dominate the stage.

His name belongs among the solid central European opera artists of the mid-century. Poell’s recordings preserve a voice of substance, craft and unshowy authority.
