André Cluytens and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra open Pristine’s Beethoven Complete Symphonies, Volume 1 with Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 and Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”, alongside the overtures to The Creatures of Prometheus, Coriolan and Fidelio. Recorded at Berlin’s Grunewaldkirche between 1958 and 1960, these studio performances appear in new XR remasterings by Andrew Rose. They begin our reissue of the orchestra’s first complete recorded Beethoven symphony cycle, ahead of the bicentenary of the composer’s death in 2027 - an important achievement by a conductor whose reputation extends well beyond his celebrated affinity with French music.

The programme offers a concentrated encounter with Beethoven at a time of rapid symphonic change, from the wit and classical proportions of the First Symphony to the expanded dramatic ambitions of the Eroica. Cluytens brings an approach attentive to melodic line and instrumental colour, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra supplying both strength and finely differentiated textures. The Second Symphony combines vigorous orchestral writing with the lyrical space of its Larghetto, while the Eroica’s Scherzo gives particular prominence to the orchestra’s horns. The three overtures add a theatrical dimension, making this opening volume more than a chronological survey of the early symphonies: it also places their developing musical language beside the composer’s writing for the stage.

On 6 November 2026, we mark the 133rd anniversary of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s death on 6 November 1893. His symphonies and orchestral works offer especially rewarding opportunities to encounter contrasting traditions of interpretation, where choices of tempo, phrasing and instrumental balance can give familiar music a markedly different character. From the dramatic sweep of the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies to the emotional contrasts of the Pathétique and Romeo and Juliet, this is a rich legacy to revisit. 10% off all recordings in our Tchaikovsky collection, automatically applied at checkout, from 6 November 2026 to 12 November 2026 inclusive.
