Eugen Jochum (1902-1987) was a German conductor, one of the major interpreters of Bruckner and the Austro-German symphonic tradition. He also worked widely in opera and sacred music.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with Hans Hotter and Bavarian State Opera forces.

Jochum’s conducting was serious, spacious and structurally grounded, with a natural command of large German forms. In Wagner, that sense of architecture matters as much as theatrical heat.

His page is justified by stature even from a small catalogue footprint. Jochum’s baton has the weight of an organ pedal and the patience of stone vaulting.
