RENATA TEBALDI'S 1952 Tosca

"It is more than possible that Madame Callas's Tosca is more effective on the stage than on discs, but whatever the reason her performance, recorded, does not equal to that of Tebaldi." - The Gramophone, 1953

It was the musical battle of the age - sopranos Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi pitted against each other by fans, record labels and critics. This week we bring back to life one of Tebaldi's great recordings: her 1952 Puccini Tosca might have been ultimately overshadowed by the Callas edition of the following year, but in this Ambient Stereo XR remastering it's not hard to hear how it wowed the critics of the day and brought the adulation her magnificent performance so richly deserved.
