MITROPOULOUS: Shostakovich 10, Athens 1955

This week, Pristine commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's death with a historic release: Dimitri Mitropoulos’s acclaimed 1955 performance of Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 10, recorded live with the New York Philharmonic in Athens. Captured during a significant European tour, this deeply emotional concert marked Mitropoulos’s poignant return to his native Greece, showcasing his remarkable intensity and insightful interpretation of one of Shostakovich’s most profound works.

Complementing this special release is Mitropoulos’s celebrated 1956 collaboration with legendary violinist Isaac Stern on Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1. This exceptional recording, noted for Stern’s lyrical virtuosity and Mitropoulos’s masterful orchestral direction, further highlights the conductor’s extraordinary artistry.

We also mark the 80th anniversary this month of the death of Mascagni, with a special 20% discount on all his music at Pristine.
