Mark Obert-Thorn returns this week to the arrangements, transcriptions and compositions of Lucien Cailliet with a second volume that offers music by a number of composers, including Bach, Vivaldi, Rachmaninov and Debussy. The majority of the recordings are performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, but as with our previous Cailliet album, this release also features contributions from a number of other orchestras and conductors.
Heard for the very first time on any release is an arrangement of Buxtehude, performed for an NBC Radio transmission by the Philadelphians in 1937. There are several other recordings made for the 78rpm era but never released at the time - they we issued much later on a very limited LP release but remain exceptionally rare in the Philadelphia/Ormandy catalogue.
