Trio Santoliquido were one of the great, yet inexplicably near-forgotten chamber music ensembles, as this - one of their later recordings - only serves to underline. Formed in Rome in the early 1940's, their playing soon attracted Deutsche Grammophon, for whom they made a number of LP recordings in the 1950's.
They also recorded this less-well-documented LP for the Musical Masterpiece Society in 1957, and what a gem it turns out to be. Coupling the familiar Archduke Trio with the less well known fourth - Gassenhauer or 'street song' - which was scored for a Trio including either a clarinet or violin, we have Beethoven at the heights of both his middle and early periods.
String tones are clear and vibrant, the piano tone warm and rich, and the playing simply divine - this really is a must!
