Quartettsatz ('Quartet movement'), now numbered as Schubert's
12th Quartet, like the 'Unfinished' Symphony stands as a portion by itself,
a work of true genius. Thought to have been written around 1820, and as
a manuscript that for a time belonged to Brahms, it was finally published
in 1870, 42 years after the composer's death.
This beautiful recording by one of the 78rpm era's greatest quartets was
issued as a single disc by HMV in the UK, and has seen little attention
since. When you hear their fabulous interpretation and the superb recording
quality you may well ask yourself why it's been kept under wraps for so
long!
