Installing the FLAC codec for WMP

If you attempt to play FLAC files in Windows Media Player it probably won't recognise the format. This is simple and easy to remedy, with the installation of a small 'codec' file into your Windows system.

First you need to download the installer from http://www.xiph.org/dshow/ - for regular Windows systems download the "win32 installer", for 64-bit Windows systems download the "x64 installer".

Then follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall any previous version of these filters. (This is important!) Go to add remove programs, remove oggcodecs.
  2. Make sure media player or any directshow applications are closed.
  3. Run the installer.

Then Windows Media Player (or any other directshow application ) will be able to play all our 16-bit and 24-bit FLAC downloads.

Test your FLAC replay with the following piece of music:

Rachmaninov: Prelude in C sharp minor, Op. 3, No. 2 (orch. Cailliet) - 4:55
The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy, Feb. 1950
Taken from
Ormandy conducts Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, PASC183
