Notes on this recording:
In January 1934 Hindemith had been busy in the studio recording his first Viola Sonata and other works at Abbey Road. But he was also asked to contribute a single side to Columbia's epic History of Music series: thus on the morning of 23rd January he awoke early, composed this short duet for Viola and Cello, and recorded it the same day.
Two days earlier he had been recording his second String Trio with violinist Szymon Goldberg and the cellist, Emanuel Feuermann. It seems Feuermann was still around, and thus able to be called upon to play the cello part in this new, short duet.
Thus we have that rarest of recordings from this era - not just a world première recording, but a world première performance on the day of composition, and with the composer playing viola and one of the world's very finest cellists playing the cello!
