Du Ring an meinen Finger
Schumann
Richard Strauss made a connection between
the success of his operas with her collaboration.
Giacomo Puccini was moved to
tears by her performance as his sister Angelica.
Thomas Mann referred to her simply as »Frau
Sonne« (»Mrs. Sunshine«) What says it all is
this: there were singers with better technique
and more breath control, but only a few who
exuded through their singing so much warmth,
so much passion, so much joy of life. Lotte
Lehmann's records - luckily there are many -
belong to the most effective (and least dangerous)
anti-depressives that have ever been on
the market.
Some purists will wrinkle up their noses at
this collection of work: Schumann, Schubert,
and Brahms songs with salon orchestra accompaniment?
Even Lehmann later distanced herself
from these recordings. But what does it
matter how sweet or sour the arrangement,
when Mrs. Sunshine is singing? Those who are
still left cold should consider the historical situation:
When Lotte Lehmann made these
recordings, orchestral arrangements of songs
were just as common as the mixing of popular
arias and songs at singers' solo recitals. The. »pure« Song Recital was at that time the
exception (such as by »specialists« like Julia
Culp or Elena Gerhardt), and it is only after the
pioneering work of the Lied pianist Michael
Raucheisen and the record producer Walter
Legge that the era of salon arrangements came
to an end.
Collectors won't be scared away in any
case; for them it is enticing to compare these
recordings to later versions by Lehmann; for
example Frauenliebe und -Ieben with the
Columbia recording (Bruno Waiter, 1941) and
the Town Hall Recital (Paul Ulanowsky, 1946).
And for those who have not yet, or only minimally
experienced the Song Artist Lehmann,
they will see how much even the »chaste« art
of Song wins when the voice lilts with the great
sensuality of singers like Lehmann. Walter
Legge said that he »never heard a virginal
sound out of her«; »Lehmann's voice wasn't
huge, but is was like a 'double bed' voice, fully
inviting, full of promise, tender, all-embracing
warmth« (On and off the record, London,
1982).
