In the recording history of Lieder, Gerhard
Hüsch is one of the great pioneers. He was
among the first to perform the complete versions
of Schubert's Winterreise and Schöne Mullerin,
Schumann's Dichterliebe and Beethoven's
An die Feme Geliebte, and his recordings have
belonged for decades to the classics of the catalogs
- partly due to his exceptional pianist,
Hanns Udo Müller, who died in an air raid in 1943.
They reflect all at once each »Emancipation
of the Song« (Kesting), that occurred in
the thirties. Pure song recitals were up to this
time something for the experts (Julia Culp,
Elena Gerhardt, Emmi Leisner); most singers
offered a mixture of songs and arias in their
recitals. In the thirties, singers gradually made a
turnaround on this issue. »Serious« singers
who held any regard for music offered »real«
song recitals with carefully chosen titles in dramatic progression...
Above all, Hüsch was famous as a Lieder
singer. Next to the classical and contemporary
German repertoire, he dedicated himself especially to the Lieder of the Finnish composer
Yrjö Kilpinen, whose works he popularized in
Germany.
As an oratorio singer he appeared
most often in Bach's Matthäuspassion. ln 1937
he was awarded a professorship at the Munich
Academy of the Art of Sound. After the war,
Hüsch was primarily a teacher. His Masterclasses (1952/53) took him all through Europe
as'well as the USA and Japan.
