Votre Toast - Bizet - Carmen
Anyone trying to write about Michael
Bohnen hardly knows where to begin. With the
opera singer, the gifted bass-baritone whom
the prolific music commentator Oskar Bie described
at the time as the only »singing actor«
on the stage?
With the operetta hero, the »Casanova« discovered by Max Reinhardt?
With the film producer and sensational actor
in silent movies? With the heavy athlete with a
biceps measurement of 37 cm who sparred
with and helped train his friend Max Schmeling
to become a world heavyweight champion in a
Cologne gym?
With the strongman who
squeezed horseshoes together with one hand
in emulation of his idol Augustus the Strong?
With the racing driver who won 14 first prizes
at races in Baden-Baden and three times even
beat Rudolf Caracciola and the famous Kleist
brothers?
With the painter and friend of Louis
Corinth (1858-1925)? With the sculptor, with
the philosopher? Or perhaps with the tokens
of recognition he received from all over the
German-speaking world for his services to
German art?
After a performance of Parsifal when he was only twenty-five, Kaiser Wilhelm
II personally appointed him royal Kammersanger.
After the Second World War he
received the First Class Order of Merit of the
Federal Republic from Theodor Heuss, the first
president of post-war Germany. He was
awarded the Goethe Prize of Berlin and was
made an honorary member of the Deutsche
Oper in Berlin.
At Christmas 1964, moreover, the Metropolitan Opera also granted him honorary
membership with pension benefits - an
honour accorded no other German singer.
Michael Bohnen's fame has survived into
our time. The city of Berlin has named a street
after him and erected a commemorative
plaque on the Kurfurstendamm. His bust
stands in the foyer of the German Opera, while
Cologne, the city of his birth, remembers him
with bronze plaques on the house in which he was born and at the site where the old
Cologne Opera once stood...
Our MP3 files are encoded at at a constant rate of 320kbps for all issues since mid-August 2008, and using the LAME encoder at high variable bitrate settings for older issues.
Each recording is presented as a single, long MP3 which can be split using the CUE sheet at the bottom of the page, automatically adding track titles and other tag information.
Most modern CD writing programs such as Nero and Burrrn can write these files directly to CD with all track information added using MP3+CUE - see our tutorial
Alternatively a cue splitter program can automatically cut and name the MP3 into individual MP3 tracks
There are also media players which use the MP3+CUE system, allowing gapless playback of all long MP3 files - essential for opera and many other classical works
